
新春New Year
すっかり乾いた稲藁の整地をしたり束ねたりしていると、掌がつるつるしだし、その手を擦り合
わせていると、身体の中を支配していた煙のようなものがスーッと抜け、祖父が倒れたあの時の
ことが彷彿とする。
低いベッドのような分厚い藁布団が用意されると、祖母はこれを寝床にすると床擦れを防げるか
らと言って、祖父が杖を支えに散歩に出ている間窓辺にたてかけ風通しをしていたのは1950年代
の初め頃、小学生にして衝撃的な藁との出会いだった。
真新しい竹筒に立てられたこの稲藁は或る日人から人へと手渡しで私の手元に届く。2018年の神無
月(10月)にチルチンびと広場コラム欄であげていただいた、稲穂のいけばなと一対のものです。
稲穂は脱穀されると食卓で光を浴びるがそれを支える葉と茎は忘れられがちです。こうやってお正月の花として、今度は花によって崇められる稲藁の存在の大きさと価値をいまいちど見直したい。

As I was clearing and bundling the dry rice straws, my palms began to feel smooth. And as I
rubbed my hands together, the smoky feeling that had taken over my body slipped away, reminding
me of the time when my grandfather collapsed.
It was a striking encounter with straw for me as a schoolgirl in the early 1950s. When a thick straw
mattress, like a low bed, was prepared, my grandmother said that she would use it as a bed to
prevent chafing, and put it on the windowsill to air out while my grandfather went for a walk with his
walking stick for support.
These rice straws, arranged in brand new bamboo containers, were one day handed to me after
being passed from person to person. They are a pair of ikebana of the ears of rice, which were
mentioned in a column posted last October. Once the ears of rice are threshed, they are
appreciated on our dining tables as food, but the leaves and stalks that support them are often
forgotten. Thus, like this, as a flower for the New Year, I would instead like to reevaluate the
importance and value of rice straw by revering its flowers.

Rice straw (from Eco Farm Okuno), longleaf pine, ornamental cabbage, chrysanthemum, coral
bush, and kumquat

Has been making arrangements for events at Kouseiji Buddhism temple since 2006.
Started Kusawara Craft in South Korea from 2007.
Has been exhibiting in a number of solo and group exhibitions.
