There was a house in the alleyway leading to the downtown area, where a few chickens used to play around inside a wire fence. One day, when I had been distant for a little while from the strange, mysterious and somewhat unforgettable scene in a residential area of the city, I realised that the chickens that used to roam freely inside the fence had disappeared, leaving only shrivelled grass.

I felt that this must have had something to do with the news of the bird flu that was all over the radio and newspapers at the time. As I look at the flower of plumed cockscomb, the darkness of my memory of this confused incident is illuminated.

Materials used in the flower arrangement
