水無月June

In the early 1970s, when domestic industry was still needed, I met a craftsman who said he could cut glass tubes and make flower vases. His workshop was located on the alleyway behind the Kanazawa University Hospital. Various glass tubes were hung on the wall, ready to meet orders from hospitals and schools. “I am probably the last generation doing this type of craftwork”. I suddenly remember the exchange between the experienced craftsman and young me, who might have been the last customer of his.

When I take them out of the box for the first time in decades, the glass vases are still the same as the day I put them away. They tugged at my heart. I held a vine plant bouncing in the air and arranged it into those vases, asking myself “Is this right?” to no one in particular.
