In this season, when we are getting more sunshine everyday, a straw hat is essential for farm work or outdoor activities. It is believed that the origin of the straw hat in Japan lies with Tanigoro Kawata, a town official, who made a hat with straw in 1872 based on that of a person from another country. It came to be mass-produced when Brother Industries Ltd. started to sell a circular sewing machine for straw hat making in 1928.

Moriyama Hat Studio in Saga Prefecture was established in 1920. Makoto Moriyama is the third generation of the business, and is one of the few craftspersons making straw hats in Japan. First, cords are made, which are like Sanada braid, by braiding flattened straw. They are then sewn together by a special sewing machine in a spiral from the top of the hat. When sewn, it is pressed onto a metal mould, and decorated with a chin strap or ribbon depending on the purpose. Going through these processes by hand, based on many years’ experience and native intuition, good old-style straw hats are produced one by one at speed yet with care.

Durability, flexibility, delicacy and a gentle curve. The handmade texture attracts many fans from outside of the local area. For example, an order came from an event of the popular animation ‘One Piece’ for many straw hats, which are a trademark of the main character in the animation. Theatre company Mumeijuku also once ordered a straw hat for the main character in their play ‘Vincent van Gogh: Lust for Life’. Moriyama Hat Studio has been making straw hats responding to the trend or need of the moment, while following the traditional process of manufacture based on the heads or purpose of Japanese people.
