水庭mizuniwa
これは不思議な光景だ。何か不自然な、そして幻想的な景色である。どこかで見たような既視感さえ感じられる。これは夢の中の出来事なのだろうか。訪れた人々はしばし無言でそこに佇むことになるのだろう。
栃木県那須郡那須町にあるアートビオトープ・水庭は、建築家石上純也によってデザインされた。伐採される予定のコナラ、ブナ、楓、山桜などの木々を牧草地だった場所に移植、大小160の池を配した。水に触れる面には防水加工が施されており木々の根が池からの水によって浸食されることなく共生することが可能だ。また、木々は視覚的に重ならないよう位置が計算されている。それぞれの池は地下の導水管でつながっており、常に水がゆるやかに循環するようになっている。表面には苔があしらわれて人々は踏み石に沿って散策することができる。
以来森は生き続けている。風によって運ばれた種から野草が生え花が咲く、水の中にはオタマジャクシが生まれ、蛙や虫たちも住み始め、鳥たちのさえずりが聴こえる。思い思いにこの楽園を住処として変容させる生き物たち。彼らもこの森を歓迎しているのだ。
このエリアには私たち人間が必要なものが揃っている。すなわち「食う」、「寝る」、そして「芸術」。ヴィラとレジデンスの二つの宿泊施設と、隣接するカフェとレストラン。そしてガラスや陶芸の体験ができるスタジオ。さらに国内外のアーティストが滞在制作をするプロジェクトも同時進行している。
今年2020年の大きなパラダイムシフトによって、「もの」だけではもう満たされない私たちの心が表面化しつつある。私たちは「未来を知るための思想」「生きものとしての親密さ」「ゆるやかな共生と瞑想」という「こと」に飢えているのだ。
息を吸って、吐く。その素朴でシンプルな生命の営み。心身を目覚めさせる時が来たのかもしれない。このアートビオトープ・水庭での滞在は、私たちの固くなった脳と身体をゆるやかにほころばせてくれるに違いない。
This is a curious scene. A somewhat surreal, dreamy scene. We even feel a deja vu in it. Is this all happening in a dream? Visitors would probably end up staying in this scene silently for a while.
Art Biotop – Mizuniwa, located in Nasu-machi, Nasu-gun in Tochigi Prefecture, was designed by architect Jun’ya Ishigami. Trees that were going to be cut down including Konara oak (Quercus serrata), beech, maple, and wild cherry were transplanted, and about 160 large and small ponds were made among them. The sides facing water have been made waterproof so that tree roots can coexist with water without being eroded. The positions of trees are carefully organised so as not to visually overlap. Each pond is connected to the others through underground water pipes which make water constantly and gently circulate. People can enjoy walking around the garden by following the stepping stones covered in moss.
Since its establishment, the forest has continuously been breathing. Wild grass and flowers come out from seeds carried by the wind. Tadpoles are born in the water, and frogs and bugs have started to settle, while birds are singing. These creatures freely inhabit this paradise. They also seem happy about the forest.
Within the area, there is everything that human beings ever need. Things to eat, places to sleep, and arts. There are two types of accommodation: villa and residence, situated by the cafe and restaurant. A studio offers glass-making and pottery-making experiences. An artist-in-residence programme is being organised at the same time.
Due to the large paradigm shift in the year 2020, it has become apparent that our minds will not be fulfilled by objects alone. We are thirsty for intangible matters such as: thoughts to understand the future; intimacy of living beings; and gentle symbiosis and mediation.
Inhale, then exhale. An innocent, simple human act. The time might have come for our body and soul to wake up. The stay at Art Biotop – Mizuniwa should be able to gently relax our tightened brain and body.
