Matsumoto Hotel Kagetsu

Matsumoto Mingei Kagu is a world-renowned furniture store in Matsumoto, established in 1944.Mingei Undo (Folk Art Movement) was led by Muneyoshi Yanagi (1889-1961) among others, who praised the beauty in functional daily objects made by ordinary people. Matsumoto Mingei Kagu has been developed within this movement.
Mingei, which indicates the beauty in utilitarian objects made by unknown yet skillful craftsmen, is also a word suggesting the spirit of world-class Japanese craftsmanship.

At Matsumoto Hotel Kagetsu, we can experience the spirit of Mingei, which is rooted in the local area, through the furniture of Matsumoto Mingei Kagu placed across the hotel.Opened in 1887, it holds a reputation as a signature classic hotel of Matsumoto. Through the rebranding work in 2016, the hotel has been pursuing further the comfort for overseas customers as well as visitors from the other parts of Japan, while keeping its original style. The rebranding makes it into a space of sophistication.

A Western-style reception floor has a profound feeling. When sitting down in one of the chairs there, you feel that as if even your breathing has become relaxed.

The guest room enjoys a harmony of sophisticated yet simple design, with a sense of freshness and furniture from Matsumoto Mingei Kagu.
The name of the restaurant I;caza[ikaza] comes from the dialect of Nagano Prefecture meaning ‘ikoyo (let’s go)’. Even though the phrase is local, it has a somewhat stateless sound. Vivid artwork by Yayoi Kusama, an internationally-renowned artist from Matsumoto, and stained glass are also welcoming.

The name of the coffee room Yatoro-Onkan was informed by the water temperature – 86 degrees – which is used for coffee making. The shop ‘tsumugu’ has a selection of sophisticated items based on the theme of ‘Mingei Philosophy’. From the banquet room to the bathing area, the concept can be sensed throughout the hotel.

Accept the culture and history of Matsumoto, as well as the beauty and harshness of region’s natural features. And try to respectfully blend in.
Matsumoto Hotel Kagetsu will certainly stay in visitors’ memories as modest yet high-class experience.
